What Is an ABA Routing Number?

An ABA routing number is a 9-digit code that identifies a specific US financial institution. Every bank, credit union, and savings institution that participates in electronic payments has at least one routing number.

Routing numbers are used for ACH direct deposits, wire transfers, check processing, and bill payments. Large banks often have different routing numbers for different states or transaction types.
